USWNT star Megan Rapinoe recently attended her fiancée Sue Bird’s final regular season home game on Sunday. The Seattle Storm player announced her retirement at the end of the 2022 season earlier this year. The couple, who have been dating since 2017, got engaged after three years of dating in 2020.

They have put their wedding planning on hold until Rapinoe’s schedule clears, as the soccer teams play all year round. Now that Bird’s retirement draws closer, Rapinoe imagines an interesting future for her fiancée in terms of career.

Rapinoe imagines a broadcasting show with the two WNBA stars would amount to incredible entertaining value. Their decades of shared experience and insights would make for some good TV. “I feel like they got to be in front of the camera. It’s just—I think it’s such a unique relationship that they have in sports.”

She explained that many times, while watching women’s sports on major networks, the broadcasters don’t really know what they are talking about. We hear superficial comments pointing out the obvious. But if experienced players with good chemistry, like Bird and Taurasi, were to take over, it would be a different story.

“They have obviously a deep respect and love,” she continued. “[The] way that they can speak about the game and critique the game in a way that still feels like they’re pushing it forward and doing the game a service.” She would enjoy a show run by these two accomplished players, and so would fans.

The Seattle Storm player, who hadn’t commented on her sexuality before this, decided to come out after she got together with Rapinoe. “I’m gay. Megan’s my girlfriend… these aren’t secrets to people who know me,” she told ESPNW at the time. She revealed she had been out to her friends and family for years.

After three years of dating, Rapinoe proposed and Bird announced their engagement through a caption-less Instagram post. Though their engagement took place in 2020, they haven’t yet tied the knot. The WNBA star guesses that their wedding would probably take place after the 2023 World Cup, depending on Rapinoe’s schedule.
