The sport of surfing has paved the way for many athletes to reach the crest of the wave. However, the history of surfing is tinted with some tragic accidents that ended the lives of many wave chasers. From predatory sharks to sharp coral surfaces, the ocean contains every vicious threat to pose a challenge to its pursuers. Likewise, the big wave surfer Malik Joyeux fell prey to the clutches of the sea, which ended up taking his life. 

Malik Joyeux was a French big-wave surfer. He trounced some of the most dangerous waves during his prime, including the Pipeline. However, in 2005, the surfer passed away while chasing a fatal wave.

On 2nd December 2005, goofy-foot surfer, ‘Petit Prince’ was surfing at Oahu’s shore in Hawaii. The surfer was paddling toward the wave crest. But, unfortunately, he got hit by its heavy lip and got pushed underwater.

Furthermore, the force of the wave was so immense that it splintered the 25-year-old’s surfing board into two. As per the report of Surfing Today, “Malik Joyeux lost his life after being hit by the heavy lip of an eight-foot wave at Pipeline”.

“Beginning to Run Out of Air”: American Surfing Icon Suffered a Two-Wave Hold-Down on One of the Most Deadly Waves in the World in 2010

Moreover, 15 minutes later, big wave surfer Myles Padaca found Joyeux’s lifeless form at the Pupukea beach break. The paramedics tried their best to resuscitate him back to consciousness, but every attempt was in vain. 

Petit Prince’s prime accolades

Joyeux had already conquered some of the major oceanic waves before his untimely demise. From conquering some ferocious barrels at Teahup0’0, Tahiti to gaining victory over Billabong Pipeline waves, the surfer had accomplished some highly regarded accolades in the initial days of his career. In 2003, The surfer received the prestigious Billabong XXL Tube of the Year award for trouncing the pipeline wave in Hawaii.

Then again, in 2004, Malik won The Monster Tube Award for paddling through some dangerous waves in Teahupo’o. However, one year later, the Champion met with an alarming surfing tragedy. While he died pursuing his beloved sport, we wish we had been able to see more of this surfing icon. Rest in peace.
