Even in today’s time, talking about mental health is considered taboo. However, due to certain recent events, there has been a gradual shift towards a more sensitive approach to the subject. Athletes face immense pressure and expectations from their country to perform well in events. Michael Phelps, significantly, is a prime example of the same.

Simone Biles also made headlines as she withdrew from multiple events at the Tokyo Olympics owing to mental health issues. The month of May is considered the ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’, and Phelps has a special message for his followers on social media.

Michael Phelps shares a special message on Instagram

Phelps has been a prominent advocate for mental health for a while now. The swimmer is in partnership with Talkspace, a digital platform that helps people seek professional help through video calls and online sessions.

On the occasion of Mental Health Awareness Month, Michael took to Instagram to post an important message for people around the globe. In partnership with Talkspace, Phelps posted a couple of photos of himself, talking about mental health. The Olympic swimmer held a card in his hands. One card read, “I give myself permission to ask for help” while the other read, “I give myself permission to forgive myself.”

The caption on the photo read, “We could all use a reminder to prioritize our mental health, but it’s often easier said than done.” Phelps also wants to encourage people to talk about their problems. He mentioned that asking for help aided him in being a better husband, father, son, and friend.

In addition, Phelps supported Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw from events during the Tokyo Olympics. Not being in the right frame of mind could lead to worse outcomes for an athlete. He also worked as an executive producer for the HBO documentary ‘The Weight of Gold’. In the documentary, various athletes have talked about the mental health challenges Olympians often face.

Let’s be honest, if you are one of the most successful swimmers in your country, there will be expectations of you. Michael is no exception. During a Society for Human Resources annual meet, he talked about the problems he faced in his life. Michael said that as a male athlete, he thought showing vulnerability was a sign of weakness.

Phelps also mentioned the fact of his second arrest after driving under the influence of alcohol. This eventually led to him checking into a facility that helped him via therapy.

Phelps looks extremely happy and stress-free now. He also joined the commentary box during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He continues to work for the well-being of athletes around the globe through various initiatives. The man is an inspiration indeed!
