Serena Williams took on her elder sister Venus Williams in the third round of Indian Wells earlier today. Serena had won eight out of their previous nine encounters. However, Venus Williams had the upper hand even before the match started, as Serena was playing her first tournament in over 400 days. However, Serena looked to be in decent touch beating a formidable opponent Kiki Bertens in her second round.
Venus drew first blood as she took the first set 6-3. The pair traded breaks in the second set and the length of rallies was much more brutal than the first. However, Venus managed to break for 5-4 and then hold on to her serve, to oust her sister.
Venus however, had nothing but kind words to say about her sister after the match. “She played so well, I think it’s such a treat for everyone to see this match so early in her comeback. I always know that it’s never over until it’s over. She kept roaring back. I’m just lucky that I’ve played more matches than her right now,” said Venus after the win, during her on-court interview.
Venus Williams will face Sevastova in her next round. Serena Williams will look to draw positives from her first tournament since 14 months. “I was just lucky taht i played more matches than her right now”, Venus said. The victory marked the first time Venus has defeated Serena since 2014 in Montreal.Venus Williams registered her 12th victory against Serena. However, Serena leads her head to head record (17-12) against Venus Williams.
In other results, Angelique Kerber knocked out Elena Vesnina, the defending champion in straight sets. Svitolina was shown the doors by the veteran Carlos Navarro in the third round. While Naomi Osaka continued her inspired run through the tournament, winning in straight sets, the Australian open champion Wozniacki had to fight hard against Sasnovich.
