World No.6 Alexander Zverev has had a long history of smashing racquets at the Australian Open. And in his first-round match itself at this year’s Major, he didn’t think twice before destroying his racquet.

Zverev played 73rd ranked Marcos Giron in the first round and was stretched to the fourth set. After missing a simple volley, Zverev smashed his racquet on the court over ten times until he battered it.

The incident happened in the second set when Zverev was serving for the set. At 5-4, Zverev was down 40-30. Zverev ran to the net after serving to finish the point but miscued the volley and the ball went flying past the baseline.

Back in the 2019 Australian Open, Zverev had smashed his racquet multiple times after losing a set in a fourth-round tie against Milos Raonic. There as well, Zverev had smashed his racquet multiple times until it disintegrated and lost its shape.

Despite this meltdown, the second set went to Zverev. He was stretched to the tiebreaker, where he converted his first set point.

Back in the first set, Zverev was ahead with a break at 4-3 but was broken back and the set went to the tiebreaker. In the first set tiebreaker, Zverev had a set point, but Giron battled hard and got the initial lead in the match by winning the set.

After a rocky first two sets, Zverev steadied his ship in the third set, where he was more fine-tuned and calm. It was a dominant set as he led every stat and minimized his errors. The third set score was 6-3.

The fourth set was a one-sided affair as Zverev showed his mantle. He broke his opponent twice and sealed the match (8)6-7, 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-2.

Zverev finds himself on the same side of the Aussie Open draw as World No.1 Novak Djokovic. And they are slated to face other in the quarterfinals.
