Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, on Sunday showed the he has not yet slipped down in the list of top goalkeepers although his team seems to have slipped quite a way down the list of top teams.

The Spaniard’s performances against Sheffield United certainly saved Manchester United from an embarrassing defeat. The home team were on the attack right from the starting whistle, which meant that de Gea had to be on his toes.

The most eye-catching of his saves came very early in the game. In the 11th minute, de Gea, at full stretch, pushed away a volley by John Lundstram from outside the box. The ball was immediately put back into the box where David McGoldrick was ready to put in a header, which was denied only due to unbelievable reflexes of de Gea.

In spite of de Gea’s heroics, his goal was breached nine minutes later, and twice later in the match. The match was down to a thrilling finish. Manchester United were 2-0 down till the 72nd minute. Seven minutes later, the scoreline read 3-2 in favour of the away side with academy graduates Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford going into the scoresheet.

However, right at the end of the game, Oli McBrunie salvaged a point for Sheffield.

Talking after the match, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that the performance was something he cannot be completely happy about although the comeback was a big positive.

“When you are 2-0 down you have to go for it, play with less fear and just go for it,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “The average ages of the goals is less than 20, it’s something we are proud of.

“It’s a great experience for our young players because it’s not easy to come back at a place like this.”

“It’s mixed emotions,” he added. “We cannot be happy, we have not performed for the majority of the game but we turned it around and we showed what we could be capable of. We have to do it now for a whole game. We know we can, we just have to show it.”
