Watch: F2 Driver Callum Ilott Has a Miraculously Close Call During the 2018 Macau Grand Prix

The Macau Grand Prix is just a week away and is normally contested by a number of F3 drivers. Last year’s race went down in notoriety for a horrific crash that resulted in sending German driver Sophia Flörsch to hospital for spinal injuries. However, the narrow nature of the circuit meant that there would be close calls as Callum Ilott found out the hard way.

During the qualifying race, Ilott turned a corner and was greeted by a crashed car blocking almost half the track. But then, he must have taken Ayrton Senna’s words, “If you no longer go for a gap that already exists, you are no longer a racing driver”, quite literally.

Somehow, the Briton found enough space to squeeze past without damaging his car. He didn’t even have to slow his car down to a crawl, but was still going at a fair amount of speed.

He went on to finish the session in 2nd place, behind his compatriot Daniel Ticktum. For this season though, Ticktum heads a 30-strong field for the Macau Grand Prix. The British driver is aiming to win the race for a record-breaking third year in succession.

Callum Ilott will also be there to try and stop his fellow countryman from achieving that record though. He will be racing with Sauber Junior Team by Charouz. His teammates for the race will be, David Schumacher, son of Ralf Schumacher, and Enzo Fittipaldi.

However, one of the biggest stories is Sophia Flörsch, who is making a comeback in Macau, a year after she suffered a horrific crash.

Flörsch is currently competing in the inaugural Formula Regional European Championship. She is lying in sixth place overall in the drivers’ standings in the competition for Formula Three drivers.

This year though, she will be racing in Macau with a different team, having competed for Van Amersfoort Racing. For the 2019 race, she will be partnering HWA Racelabs alongside Jake Hughes and Keyvan Andres.
