The Canadian Grand Prix 2019 was a weekend to forget for McLaren as they walked away point-less. The British outfit had a great opportunity when one of their drivers, Lando Norris was running in the points. Unfortunately, disaster struck when Norris had to pull over with a broken right rear suspension.

Initially, it was thought that he had brushed the Wall of Champions on the exit of the final corner. However, new onboard footage showing the rear of the MCL34 showed otherwise.

As it turned out, the McLaren had not been very kind to its brakes and it came back to bite Lando Norris later. A small fire broke out on the right rear, and the heat was enough to burn through the suspension.

In the end, poor Norris was forced to pull over and parked it in the area near the pit lane exit. The situation was so dire, that Norris was unable to even make it into the final corner and took the escape road.

Lando Norris was out of the race, the first casualty, and teammate Carlos Sainz was unable to get into the points. It capped off a miserable day in the office for the team and the drivers in Montreal.

The frustrated Lando Norris said, “I had a problem with overheating at the back of the car which led to my retirement – I have no clue what happened and until the team have looked at it in detail we don’t know for sure. I didn’t hit a wall or anything so I’ve no idea.”

“It’s annoying because until then it had been a fun race, battling with Max in the opening laps. There was good potential to maybe get some points today so it’s especially frustrating. But these things happen, so it’s a case of now looking ahead to Paul Ricard.”
