Over the years, Call of Duty Black Ops has become one of the most iconic titles in the history of FPS games. On May 18, 2010, Treyarch and Activision unveiled the debut trailer for the game. Consequently, Black Ops was released later in November that year for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. After the remarkable success of Modern Warfare 2, expectations were heavy for the next Call of Duty title.

The game lived up to those expectations to the fullest, with an incredible campaign and stellar multiplayer. Black Ops, which served as a sequel to World At War, generated three more sequels, namely Black Ops II, III, and IV. According to Statista, it is the highest-selling game within the CoD franchise, with almost 31 million copies sold as of January 2020.

Today, May 18, 2020, marks the 10th anniversary of the official announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops. To commemorate the day, Treyarch published a recap video on its Twitter handle. They also shared a blog on their website, looking back at the decade, and taking us down the memory lane.

The video on Twitter acts as a tribute and recaps the game and the series as a whole. After all, it is a special occasion, worthy of celebration. “Today, we’re celebrating with a recap video as a tribute to the series that introduced Woods, Mason, Hudson, and of course… the numbers!” Treyarch writes.

The recap video provides a highlight reel of the original game from the BO series. It features the protagonist Alex Mason, Frank Woods, Jason Hudson, Victor Reznov, and also the antagonist Nikita Dragovich.

Meanwhile, in the blog post, Treyarch explains how Call of Duty World at War, including its Zombies mode, gave them the opportunity to solely focus on creating Call of Duty titles. “While World at War gave us characters like Reznov and Easter Eggs like a little-known bonus mode called Zombies, it was just a glimpse into just how much story there was to tell.

The most enthralling part of BO was its campaign’s storyline based on real-world historical events but modified to Treyarch’s taste. “We went deep into the shadows: Call of Duty: Black Ops was the history you thought you knew. It was Woods, Hudson, and Mason… it was plausible deniability, and mindf*ckery.”
