While Leclerc took a fantastic pole, he lost out at the start of the race having been overtaken by Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. The clear advantage that Ferrari has this weekend meant he was bound to overtake Bottas and he sure did in a couple of laps. But while Vettel moved ahead, Leclerc hunted him like a prancing horse. The Bahrain Grand Prix has become synonymous with F1 fans over the years as one of the opening rounds of the Championship season. Starting off as a day race back in 2004, the Sakhir International Circuit embraced nightfall in its 10th Anniversary race and has remained a night race ever since.

F1 raced on the Bahrain track's "outer layout", consisting of a fairly simple layout and long straights. Many fans and drivers dubbed the outer track an "oval", given the nature of its configuration. With minimal corners, there was plenty of overtaking opportunities in round 2 of the Bahrain race.

Michael Schumacher won the inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix in 2004, accompanied by Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button on the podium.

In 2011, F1 canceled the Bahrain event amidst the Bahraini uprising. Despite much opposition, F1 decided to hold a race at the Sakhir International Circuit the following year.

Ever since first experimenting with a night race in Bahrain in 2014, F1 has made the change stick for subsequent events. Bahrain arguably provides the best F1 spectacle amidst the desert under the lights.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Bahrain replaced the Australian GP as the season opener for the 2021 season. Lewis Hamilton won the first race of the 2021 season ahead of Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas.

The Sakhir International Circuit features a 5.412km long track designed by legendary F1 architect Hermann Tilke. The outer circuit, commonly referred to as 'The Oval,' features a 3.543km track minus the tricky braking zones and twisty bits of the conventional circuit.

There were a lot of doubts regarding Ferrari's signing for 2019. Many people suspected that he wasn't ready and that his much-experienced teammate, <a class="jsx-2b55705d932ea6e9" href="https://www.essentiallysports.com/tag/sebastian-vettel/" target="_self" rel="noopener">Sebastian Vettel</a>, would undermine him on a grand scale. However, he ended up coming out on top, claiming P4 in the Drivers' Championship ahead of the German.

The very next season, despite Ferrari's struggles, Leclerc continued to carry the outfit on his shoulders all by himself. In the process, Leclerc also dominated against his championship-winning teammate for the second straight season, who later quit driving for Ferrari. The Monegasque, however, is facing a stern challenge from his new teammate, Carlos Sainz.

Over the course of 85 race starts, Leclerc has scored 4 wins, 16 podiums, and racked up 646 points. He finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship in 2019. Leclerc also finished in P8 in 2020, as opposed to his teammate's P13. And lately, in 2021, Leclerc almost out-scored his teammate but ended up losing the lead at the Abu Dhabi GP.

The 2022 season was Leclerc's best yet as he went on to claim 3 race wins over the course of the season. He was level on points with Sergio Perez at 290 points each heading into the final race of the 2022 season. The Ferrari driver pulled off an overtake on Perez who started ahead of him in P2. Vettel came agonizingly close to clinching his first Championship with Ferrari in 2018, but his campaign fell apart towards the end of the season.

2019 was a difficult season for the German driver.
