Andre Agassi was certainly one of the biggest athletes to emerge from the United States of America. That’s saying something considering the kind of sports stars the country has given the world. 

While the debate about who the better player is between him and Pete Sampras will keep going on forever, Agassi‘s achievements have certainly cemented a special position in American and world tennis. The fact that he was part of an era where the US was most dominant in the sport, works to his credit. His eight Grand Slam titles, 101 weeks at the number one ranking, and an Olympic Gold medal, all mark his place in history. 

That’s why, when Andre Agassi finally decided to bid farewell to the sport, there was not one dry eye in the crowd in America. It was the 2006 US Open and he was playing in front of his home crowd. He lost to German tennis star Benjamin Becker and said goodbye to tennis forever.

What happened during the last match of Andre Agassi? 

Andre Agassi lost to the 112th ranked player in the world. It was as if destiny had marked this day. He put up a battle before losing 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5 to a spirited Becker. 

Becker hit an ace for the victory, and immediately, the crowd erupted to pay respect to their beloved legend. Andre Agassi’s eyes welled up with tears as he tried to make sense of his emotions. It was like he couldn’t make peace with the fact that the time had finally come to bid adieu.
