Jorge Masvidal picked up three victories this year. It started with Darren Till’s scintillating knockout at UFC Fight Night. Masvidal followed it up with an absolute cracker when he knocked out undefeated Ben Askren in 5 seconds. Additionally, he also recorded the fastest knockout in UFC’s history. He then captured the BMF title with a victory against Nate Diaz at UFC 244.

Masvidal returned a more efficient fighter in 2019 after he fell short on successive occasions against Damien Maia and Stephen Thompson. But before these two fights, Masvidal had an outstanding run during 2016 and early 2017.

He picked up successive victories against Ross Pearson and Jake Ellenberger. In a test against how good he is, Masvidal faced UFC veteran Donald Cerrone.

Jorge Masvidal knocks out Cerrone in the second round

Jorge Masvidal looked incredible against someone as talented and experienced as Donald Cerrone. Masvidal has been competing inside the octagon for quite some time now. However, Cerrone’s achievement inside the octagon makes him stand out. After failing to secure the lightweight title from Rafael Dos Anjos, he picked up four successive victories and faced Masvidal.

Masvidal outnumbered Cerrone through impressive boxing and completely dominated the first round. Cerrone tried for a comeback but was caught with a brutal right hand. Masvidal followed with a flurry of punches. Even before Cerrone could respond, the referee had seen enough and called the fight in favor of Masvidal.

After a very successful 2019, Masvidal looks set to challenge Kamaru Usman for the championship belt. While there was speculation of a Masvidal and McGregor fight, it seems unlikely at the moment. Dana White has also shown interest in a championship match between Usman and Masvidal next.

After Kamaru Usman retained the UFC welterweight title against Colby Covington, Masvidal looks next in line for a shot at the championship belt.
