“We Should Try” – Venus Williams on Competing Behind Closed Doors

The governing bodies of tennis are leaving no stones unturned to restart the proceedings in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. One of the alternatives is to hold the events behind closed doors. Subsequently, many top tennis players, including Roger Federer, rejected the idea of playing in front of empty stadiums. However, former World No.1 Venus Williams wants to try competing without fans.
Earlier, Rafael Nadal also revealed that he is not keen on playing behind closed doors. However, the Spaniard explained that he would adjust to the situation like everyone else if they are required to compete without spectators.

“A lot of people want to see sports at this point” – Venus Williams
Many other sports like soccer, Formula1, boxing, and MMA have resumed their events without fans. Venus feels that tennis should follow suit and resume while following the right protocols and keep those involved in a safe environment.

“I think a lot of sports are returning. A lot of people want to see sports at this point. It’s been very exhausting being at home. So having somethings go back… People want to see it now. It will make people happy. I think we should try,” Venus Williams told Tennis Majors.

Tennis requires a lot of international traveling week after week. Consequently, it remains under suspension longer than most sports. However, if the situation demands to play with no fans, the organizers should hold the event behind closed doors.
Moreover, many lower-level professionals fell into deep financial crisis during the hiatus as they solely depend on tournament earnings to make a living. Hence, they will be hoping the season resumes soon. It is still uncertain when the tour restarts, however, reports suggest the final decision about the future of the tour will come by June 15.
