Williams F1 Could Drop Mercedes for Renault Power

The Williams F1 team have endured a nightmarish few seasons in Formula One. From a team that produced champion drivers to being reduced to propping up the back of the grid is a travesty. However, now, the team are eager to turn their fortunes around for the 2020 Formula One season.

As it turns out, the Grove-based team could be set for a major shake-up for the 2020 season. This is because, reports have surfaced linking them with a potential tie up with Renault as an engine supplier rather than Mercedes.

The British outfit are one of the most successful teams in the history of Formula 1, having won nine constructors championships with only Ferrari having won more. However, their last title victory was 22 years ago, and they have gradually dropped down the ranks of the most competitive teams. Their last win was in 2012, nearly seven years ago, courtesy Pastor Maldonado in Spain.

As of 2019, they are by far the worst team on the grid, with Robert Kubica and rookie driver George Russell regularly finishing at the back of the field. Their lack of speed has never been more evident that the current campaign. The team were aware that they were in trouble, ever since the season began, with their car being late to testing. Then, it was a management shake-up which also complicated matters.

Coming to their engine supplier history, they have had 10 different engine providers – Ford-Cosworth, Honda, Judd, Renault, Mecachrome, Supertec, BMW, Cosworth, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz.

According to AutoBild, Williams are aiming to change their fortunes by leaving Mercedes in favour of Renault, who have been enjoying success in the 2019 season with McLaren, the fourth-best team after the first nine races. Even the works Renault team have been performing fairly well this season. At this point, one has to ask, what do they have to lose.
