Roger Federer Matches Rafael Nadal’s Prestigious French Open Record at Wimbledon Championships 2021

Roger Federer has proven his class at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, as he progressed to the quarterfinals. The Swiss star defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in straight sets and went on to win 7-5, 6-4, 6-2. Federer also completed 105 wins at SW19, and he is currently playing in his 22nd Wimbledon Championships.

The 39-year-old beat Sonego in two hours and 11 minutes to win his 105th game at the All England Club. He took more than the usual time required for his straight-set win but eventually made it to the last eight.

Roger Federer equals Rafael Nadal’s record at Roland Garros

Rafael Nadal holds the record for 105 wins at the French Open, as the Spaniard has a record 13 titles on the clay court. His 106th win was halted by Novak Djokovic at this year’s Roland Garros semifinal. Federer equaled Nadal’s record of 105 wins at a Grand Slam event.

The former World No. 1 reached his 18th Wimbledon quarterfinals. As a result, he became the oldest quarter-finalist at SW19 at 39 years and 337 days and beat Australian legend, Ken Rosewall.

The Swiss star is chasing his record ninth title at the Wimbledon Championships and faces a challenge ahead of him. Federer will be playing either Daniil Medvedev or Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Federer’s chances at SW19 in 2021

The Swiss master has made a comeback after sustaining two knee surgeries last year. Federer lost the 2019 Wimbledon Championships final against Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final. The number six seed at Wimbledon this year will be hungry for his 21st Grand Slam title, after having a poor run this year.

Federer has a 5-3 win-loss record this year, as he missed out on a lot of action due to injury. The Swiss star did not have a good pre-season before arriving at SW19, as he lost to Felix Auger Aliassime at the Halle Open. Federer even withdrew from the French Open this year due to health issues concerning his knee.

It will be tough for Federer to claim his ninth Wimbledon title as World No. 1 Novak Djokovic looks for a sweep. However, Federer’s best shot at winning a final Grand Slam title will be this year, considering his age and fitness.
