He said, “I am pleased and grateful that the Judge overturned my visa cancellation. Despite all that has happened in the past week, I want to stay and to try to compete at the Australian Open.”

Novak Djokovic and the Williams sisters have never shied away from praising one another. Djokovic, during the presentation of Serena and Venus’ co-produced film ‘King Richard’, admitted to being motivated by the pair’s legacy and stated that he is one among the millions of fans supporting them.

A look back at the Serbian’s visa controversy

Novak Djokovic had arrived Down Under hoping to defend his Australian Open title. However, he was detained by the border authorities upon his arrival in Australia. They canceled the Serbian champion’s visa and subsequently threatened him with deportation.

The cause of the controversy had been his stance on vaccination, which was opposed to the Australian government’s rules; however, he was granted a last minute medical exemption which many had criticized.

After a prolonged fiasco, Judge Anthony Kelly made the ruling in favor of World Number 1. He allowed the Serb to leave the detention center. But the lawyers representing the Australian government stated that the final decision rests on the Australian immigration minister, Alex Hawke, on whether to cancel the tennis superstar’s visa. If the minister cancels his visa, Djokovic wouldn’t be allowed to enter Australia for three years.
