Fans are quite aware of the inspiring story of Serena and Venus Williams. Their journey and records have been not just admiring but also a model to follow for other players. However, only a few know that something quite unique happened on this date today exactly 19 years ago when Venus created history in tennis.

On 25th February 2002, Venus Williams became the first-ever African-American person to reach the top spot in WTA or ATP rankings. She ended the previous year at the No.2 spot and soon climbed to the top position in the early part of 2002.

The senior Williams had already won four Grand Slams before becoming the World No.1 player. She won the Wimbledon Championships and US Open title in 2000 and 2001. Interestingly, she is the only WTA player who rose to the top spot after winning four majors. All the others managed to do so after winning three just Grand Slams or even less.
