It was a grim day for American basketball yesterday. One of the most successful players in the sport, Bill Russell, passed away. The news was confirmed by the statement on his official Twitter account. Subsequently, social media was flooded with tributes to the legendary player-turned-activist.

Notable personalities from varied fields took to their official social media handles to express their feelings. The likes of Alexis Ohanian, Martina Navratilova, and Billie Jean King were among the most prominent ones who paid their tributes to Bill.

Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, and Alexis Ohanian remember the great Bill Russell

Navratilova took to Twitter to remember the legendary career of Bill Russell as she paid her tribute. She said, “RIP Bill Russell, a giant in every sense of the word- athletic, civil rights, altruistic – the whole lot. RIP champ!”

Further, Billie Jean King also shared her emotions on Instagram, saying, “Bill Russell was a once-in-a-generation activist athlete who made all of those around him better both on and off the court. He had a career of firsts, and led the way for so many. I admired him my entire life and he had a huge influence on my career. He was the ultimate leader, ultimate team player and the ultimate champion. Rest in peace, Bill. You will be missed.”

Bill Russell’s legendary career

The legendary NBA player had many firsts to his name. He was one of the league’s most successful players, winning 11 NBA championships. Additionally, he was the pillar of the Boston Celtics dynasty, which had won eight straight NBA titles. After his successful playing career, he became the league’s first African-American coach.
