In what can be considered a subtle yet shocking move, 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams gave her fans a timeline of when she will be quitting from the sport. Even though there is no specific mention of the word ‘retirement’ in her latest essay for Vogue Magazine, the American star announced that she is ready to face the inevitable.

Serena, who won her first WTA singles match in more than a year at the National Bank Open 2022 in Toronto, shared an essay she wrote for Vogue on Twitter with the caption, “A must read”.

There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun.”

From the aforementioned text, it becomes evident that Serena intends to move away from the sport right after the US Open swing is done.

In the Vogue essay, the American star clearly expressed her disliking for the word retirement and how she couldn’t muster up the courage to discuss it with her family, except with her therapist. Serena also addressed how she likes to silently walk away from the game and most likely or not, do it at New York, in-front of her home-crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Serena also took a great deal of time to explain her gratefulness towards fans, who have been a huge pillar of support for her in her legendary career.

While there is still time before Serena Williams actually goes out permanently from the sport, the announcement will definitely hit fans hard as they were just relishing her performance in Toronto yesterday.

As confirmed by Serena in the essay, she will play the warm-up events in Toronto and Cincinnati, before moving on to the US Open. All said and done, it’s a historic career that every tennis fan will be proud to witness as they hope for a big run from her in-front of home fans at Flushing Meadows later this month.
