Four-Time Grand Slam Champion Cites Maria Sharapova and Others Example to Prove Serena Williams is The GOAT

Serena Williams has earned quite a reputation in tennis over the last two decades and with good reason. She is one of the greatest players of all time in the history of tennis and is still giving some really tough competition to her opponents on the courts.

Even though Williams hasn’t returned to the court since the Wimbledon Championships 2021, fans expect her to make a comeback next year.

Rennae Stubbs applauds Serena Williams for her consistency on the court

In a recent podcast, former Australian player Rennae Stubbs lauded Serena’s tenacity and strong will power. She touched upon how the 23-time Grand Slam champion started playing during the era of Steffi Graff and other champions and has continued to dominate the sport well beyond that. her dominance has been apparent until a bit of a downfall in recent years.

“Well, I think what displays Chanda, is the incredible tenacity and will of Serena, because you have mentioned some amazingly great champions. I mean, she did start playing with Steffi, was still playing, they played a few times. You know, you think about that and you think about the fact that she was around, you know, during the Kim Clijsters, Justin Anna period, Emily Mauresmo. You know, the list was long,” said Stubbs.

Now a tennis analyst, Stubbs revealed that all the great players who started playing before or with Serena have already retired. Thus, she praised her once again and claimed that it is not easy to maintain that consistency since one has to face many physical and emotional barriers on the journey.

“Jennifer Capriati, I mean, all the great champions that she played against that retired, they didn’t want to keep going anymore. Because it’s I don’t think people understand how difficult it is day in and day out to physically put yourself through it, and emotionally put yourself through it,” added the former World No.64 player.

“Still putting herself on the line”- Stubbs on Williams

In the same podcast, Stubbs highlighted that while all of Serena’s earlier opponents have also hung their racquets including the likes of Maria Sharapova, she is still battling on the court at the age of 40. Thus, in a way, by citing the examples of all the great players, Stubbs clearly hinted that Williams is the G.O.A.T for her.

“Serena is still out there… When you think about all the more, all these great champions at one slams, during her period of time of Maria Sharapova’s, they all, they’re all done now, you know, and Serena is still putting herself on the line. And that shows you the uniqueness of her greatness to go through all and there’s probably 10 more that we can mention that I can’t think of other top of my head. So I think they pushed her to get better…” concluded 4-time Grand Slam champion.
