It was the 2017 Australian Open. Serena Williams entered the tournament on level with Steffi Graf for the record of most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era. Determined as ever, she decided to play in the tournament. Moreover, she went on to win the title, defeating her elder sister, Venus in the summit clash. Serena was dominant throughout the tournament and did not drop a set en route to her title victory. With this win, she became the first player to win 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era. Recently, her husband, Alexis Ohanian, recounted Serena’s special victory.

Moreover, it was a special tournament for Serena on the personal front as well. Before the tournament, she found out that she will soon give birth to her first child, Olympia.

Alexis Ohanian hails Serena Williams as the ‘GOAT’

The Reddit co-founder had special words for his wife on her incredible record. He took to Twitter and said, “OOPS. Someone brought the receipts. Y’all had the perfect storyline when Serena beat the record (Steffi) while pregnant + without dropping a set the entire tournament.”

After that tournament, Serena took a break from tennis. In September that year, she gave birth to her daughter, Olympia. Subsequently, she tied the knot with Alexis in a private ceremony.

Serena’s emotional message for her sister

During the post-match interview after her third-round loss at the US Open, her final tournament, Serena thanked her elder sister, Venus Williams, for having a huge impact on her career. She said, “I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus, so thank you, Venus! She’s the only reason if Serena Williams ever existed.”

Serena and Venus also played doubles together at this year’s US Open. However, their journey ended in the first round. Although Serena retires just one major title behind the all-time record, having dominated the women’s circuit for more than 25 years, she retires as one of the legends of the sport.
