‘My Dad Was Strict’ – Venus Williams Details ‘King’ Richard’s Unconventional Way of Training Her and Serena Williams

Over the years, Venus Williams has made a name for herself for her incredible performances. She has won seven Grand Slam titles and is a former WTA World No. 1.

Williams sisters have always been open about how strongly their parents have supported them, throughout their professional careers. Venus Williams talked about her father in an interaction that took place on Instagram. Almost everyone knows about King Richards’ methods of training the sibling duo. Long before Venus and Serena Williams were old enough to pick up a tennis racket, their father had already planned their future.

Venus Williams’ flashback when asked about initial training days

Venus Williams hosted a quiz session with her fans over Instagram. In one of those questions, she was asked about her favorite trick shot.

“I don’t have any trick shots. We never practiced them growing up. My dad was strict. We practiced winning shots lol. The players that hit those shots, put a lot of time into it. It’s not by chance.” she wrote, answering about her father’s way of training them. As we all know, the Williams sisters have learned tennis under the shadow of their father, Richard Williams. Their father trained the iconic duo in their initial days.

Venus and Serena’s father, Richard Williams, was a great man himself, who taught his two children how to play tennis, and become champions even though he had no experience of his own. 

Williams will play in the US Open

Former world number 1 Venus Williams lost to Karolina Pliskova in the Cincinnati. Williams entered Cincinnati with a wild card challenge. A wild card winner in the major draw in Cincinnati, Williams lost to former star Pliskova 7-5 6-1. 

 This year, she played in several singles matches at the City Open in Washington DC, the National Bank Open in Toronto, and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner has received a wildcard for the US Open 2022. Venus, the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open singles champion, missed last year’s tournament with an injury that kept him out for nearly a year before returning to the tour at Wimbledon this year.

Venus Williams is back in the U.S. Open for her sister Serena’s final tournament. Venus Williams won back-to-back US titles in 2000 and 2001. This year will be her 25th year since her 17-year-old self reached the final in her first entire season on tour, held at Flushing Meadows in 1997.
