Jessica Pegula, the 28-year-old American tennis player, has had an impressive year, reaching a career-high ranking of no.3 in the world. However, that hasn’t helped her in terms of gaining the support of fans. She recently shared her views regarding the indifference that she experiences from her fans during an exclusive interview. Pegula was aware of the root cause of this behavior and understood the fans’ reasoning behind it.


Pegula has put together an incredibly consistent 2022 campaign. The American had won the biggest title of her career by defeating four Grand Slam champions in a row at the Guadalajara Open.

Jessica Pegula is the multi-billionaire Terrence Pegula’s daughter, and she feels fans don’t support her because of her lineage. She hails from a wealthy family that owns the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres and the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. She believes that her story is not necessarily one that people support. In the interview, the American tennis player was quoted, “just because you can afford so-called the best coach in the world, it doesn’t mean that it’s going to work.

She further added, “So I think sometimes I get the feeling that people don’t want to root for me because it’s not more of like the fairytale, Cinderella story.

Pegula has racked up 39 victories on the tour at the WTA-1000 level since the beginning of 2021, more than any other player. Despite a challenging WTA Tour Finals debut in Fort Worth, Pegula is just one of the two players to reach the quarterfinals at three of the four majors in 2022. With doubles partner Coco Gauff, Pegula has won 5 major tournaments in 2022.

Considering her consistent performances, one can argue that she has a reason for feeling disappointed with the reception from fans. She clarified, “All the players and all the team, definitely see that I put in the work. I think having that respect amongst my peers is more important because I know what they see and it doesn’t matter what anyone else doesn’t see.”

Pegula has had the best season of her career to date. Her 2022 campaign includes her first WTA 1000 title, her first appearance in the WTA Finals, and her ascent into the top three of the WTA rankings. She recently shared with Eurosport that she has planned to visit Napa.
