Venus and Serena Williams are amongst the greatest players to have played at Wimbledon. While Serena has gone on to win seven titles at the tournament, her elder sister has triumphed on five occasions. Additionally, the Williams sisters have also teamed up to clinch six doubles titles at Wimbledon.

The two made a comeback at this year’s Wimbledon Championships. While Serena opted to play in singles, Venus participated in mixed doubles alongside Jamie Murray. While Serena lost in the opening round against Harmony Tan, Venus reached the second round in mixed doubles before bowing out of the tournament. Recently, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza expressed her desire to play against the Williams sisters at Wimbledon.

Sania Mirza’s unfulfilled wish to play singles against Venus and Serena Williams at Wimbledon

During a rapid-fire round at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships, Mirza was asked the one opponent that she wanted to play but she never did at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. Replying to this question, Mirza said, “Maybe Serena in singles or Venus in singles but I did play them in doubles but never in singles.”

In their only meeting on the tennis court, Serena defeated Sania at the 2005 Australian Open in straight sets. On the other hand, Sania and Venus have met thrice, with the latter winning all three of them.

Recently, the former Nike director, Mike Nakajima, heaped praise on Serena for her on and off-court achievements. He said, “She’s had her hands in so many different things, so many interests, so many passions, that I think in a lot of ways it won’t matter when she stops. Serena will always be Serena.”
