He was always there to encourage Serena during her training sessions and matches. However, he was not there for her daughter during a crucial event in her life.

Richard was not there for his daughter’s wedding due to his health issue. But, the 23 grand slam title winner once revealed that she didn’t hate her father for not attending her wedding.

Serena Williams once talked about her father’s absence during her wedding

The American tennis legend said that a lot of daughters would have despised their fathers for not attending their wedding. But Serena said that she was not one of them. Serena went on to say that her father, Richard Williams, was going through some difficulties in the past few years.

Serena Williams said, “Maybe a lot of daughters wouldn’t react the same way, but I know the struggles he’s had these last few years.”

The 23 grand slam title winner stated that she completely understands her father’s issues, which is why he did not attend her wedding. She said, “And if he doesn’t want to be up there in front of a lot of people, I completely understand. Look, when we first came on the scene, there were a lot of people who didn’t get him. I don’t think a lot of them wanted to get him. I don’t think a lot of him could have anyway.”

She stated that a lot of people couldn’t understand her father, as he was not close to anyone. Serena further added, “Our family knows what we have. We just want each other to be happy. That’s what matters. I don’t think anything could ever change that.”

The American tennis legend stated that the Williams family only cares about each other’s happiness. She also revealed that her father’s absence did not bother her during her wedding to the American entrepreneur, Alexis Ohanian. The 23 grand slam title winner, Serena has always respected her father and praised him for her success.
