Serena Williams Opens up About How She Feared for Her Career After Injuring Her Hamstring at Wimbledon Championship

Having a dream comeback, Serena Williams is undoubtedly showing her capabilities on the grass courts of Eastbourne. Eyeing a strong singles comeback at the 2022 Wimbledon, Williams is currently playing doubles with Ons Jabeur at the WTA 500 Rothesay International.
While the 23-time singles Grand Slam champion and the 14-time doubles Grand Slam champion is rolling her way to the tour, she feared doing so a year earlier. Going back in time, Williams suffered a major hamstring injury at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. An injury that forced her to be out of the tour for a whole year. In the semifinals of Eastbourne with Ons Jabeur; Williams recently opened up about how she feared her career during that phase.

Serena Williams talks about the fear of her career
Following her first win in a year, Serena was questioned if she feared for her career. “Absolutely, for sure,” the former World No. 1 replied. Elaborating further, she added, “I would be dishonest if I said it wasn’t. But now my body feels great.”

Serena is a 14-time Grand Slam champion. Needless to say, like singles, Serena also has her hand in the doubles game. An example of this can be seen in Eastbourne. Where she and Ons are in the semifinals despite being out for a year. However, despite being in the last 4, the 7-time Grand Slam champion is largely considering Eastbourne as a training step for the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

Going further in the conversation, Williams further elaborated on how she has been preparing to play at the lush green courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. And how the training has been affecting her.
“It’s doubles, I’m only playing half of the court. But I’ve been doing a lot of training and so it definitely feels good.”
