It’s been over a week now since Serena Williams announced her return to Wimbledon, one of her favorite Grand Slam events. Incidentally, this is the event that forced her out of the tennis court for nearly a year. Now, she has come back to the same Grand Slam event, possibly to take another shot at Margaret Court’s record 24 Major titles. 

However, the journey won’t be easy for the American legend, as she was given a tough draw in this year’s Wimbledon. On her path to the final, she will face plenty of seeded players, including Coco Gauff.

Serena Williams faces a tough draw at the Wimbledon Championships

According to the top seeds at this year’s Wimbledon, Serena Williams really had a difficult draw. In the second round, she could face the 32nd seed, Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. Interestingly, she played the Spaniard a few days back at the Eastbourne International while playing doubles with Ons Jabeur; the American star won that match with Jabeur.

If she wins the second-round match, she could face last year’s finalist and the no.6 seed this year, Karolina Pliskova in the third round, which will not be an easy match at all. Moreover, Pliskova has already beaten Serena twice; once at the 2016 US Open semi-final and again at the 2019 Australian Open quarter-final. If the American player manages to win the third round, she could potentially face the 18-year-old American rising star Coco Gauff in the fourth round. This match will feature two generational superstars, making it particularly appealing to fans.

After the fourth round, the path could be more difficult for Serena. In the quarter-finals, she could face the no.4 seed Paula Badosa. However, we could also see a potential match-up between Serena and Simona Halep. In the semis, she will most probably find herself against Iga Swiatek, as she is one of the favorites to win the tournament. According to the seeding, in the final, she will face the Estonian player, Anett Kontaveit.

However, because of the unpredictability factor in the WTA, a few upsets could very well happen, and that could go in favor of Serena.

Serena played only two matches before Wimbledon

This week Serena made her return to tennis at the Eastbourne International, where she played doubles with the World no.3 Ons Jabeur. Surprisingly, she had a great return, as she won two back-to-back matches to reach the semi-final. Unfortunately, her partner, Jabeur, suffered a leg injury, which cut short Serena’s preparation for Wimbledon.
