“Talent of the Century”: Liverpool Manager Says Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez Have Inspired Him to Follow Women’s Tennis

An unexpected and dominant victory by a newbie, who just started taking baby steps on the WTA tour is a massive event in the world of tennis in its long history. When Britain’s qualifier Emma Raducanu defeated another talented youngster Leylah Fernandez to win her maiden US Open title, prominent people across sports began praising the teenage prodigy’s talent and dominance on-court.

The latest to join the club was Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp. Klopp played a huge role in Liverpool winning their first Premier League title in 2019, an achievement that the club has been waiting to accomplish for three decades.

Talking to Sky Sports over the Brit’s amazing three-week run at the US Open, Klopp praised the courage shown by both Raducanu and Fernandez in their first major final.

Women’s tennis is obviously in a brilliant moment, in the moment. These two girls were 18 and 19, what they showed was massively impressive( during the game). Both girls, how they spoke(in the trophy ceremony), at 18 and 19, that was inspiring, even more so than the tennis”, Klopp said.

Jurgen Klopp went on to talk more about the way the two finalists presented themselves in a high-pressure match and about their composure throughout the contest.

I was absolutely overwhelmed by the way the two girls presented themselves. Even if it’s only for a few hours, but they were obviously bold and it was really nice. She is for sure talent of the century, but anyhow without hard work, it was not possible to be there.”, continued the Liverpool Club manager.

Finally, Klopp concluded that he would be following women’s tennis more frequently now than before.

Doing that, or that she(Emma Raducanu) did that, and now she is there in that moment, and you see you are smiling during the game. It’s just, the nicest thing I can imagine. I will watch women’s tennis much more now again than I did in the last few years”. 

It was indeed inspiring to see two youngsters play high-level tennis on their maiden run to a major final. Both Raducanu and Fernandez might play more frequently as they saw their rankings take a huge leap post the US Open.
