‘There Is a War Going On’- Iga Swiatek Makes a Statement on Wimbledon’s Points Being Stripped Off

Recently, the organizers of Wimbledon announced that the tournament will impose a ban on the Russian and Belarusian players for this year’s event. Therefore, it will not act host to players such as Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Victoria Azarenka. However, the decision made to put chains on the acting countries backfired. As it suffered a major backlash from almost the entire tennis fraternity. Even so, the championship is standing firm on its decision, thus inviting consequences.

With the grass-based Grand Slam on the doorstep, ATP has announced that there will be no ranking points involved in the tournament. As a result of which many players such as Naomi Osaka seem uninterested in the event. Further, the WTA No.1 Iga Swiatek also shared her thoughts about the same.

Iga Swiatek weighs in

Iga Swiatek is currently participating in the French Open and on Monday she took an easy win over the Ukrainian tennis ace Lesia Tsurenko. The Pole thrashed Tsurenko in straight sets of 6-2, 6-0. Thereafter, while speaking to the press, she explained her stand on the entire issue.

She said, “Well, I have never really had a situation to play without points, and I don’t really know how I’m going to react. But I think what when I’m going to step out on court it’s going to be normal for me, because I don’t mind points. I already have so much points this season, that it’s really it’s going to be fine for me.”

Thereafter she added, “But for me it’s more the political side of things, because, you know, Poland is supporting Ukrainians, and the war is right next to my country. So basically, it’s harder on me from that perspective. For me, you know, it’s Wimbledon, for sure. It’s one of the most important tournaments in the season. But there is war going on. So I look at it more from that way than, you know, what’s gonna happen on rankings.”

Who is Swiatek’s next opponent?

Swiatek is on a massive winning streak of 29 matches. Further, in most of those 29 matches, she has taken victories in straight sets. Therefore, it won’t be wrong to say that she currently is in a different league and might be the most prominent contender in the ongoing Grand Slam.

Further, the 20-year-old is going to meet the American tennis ace and the former World No. 18, Alison Riske, in the second round of the French Open. Swiatek has faced Riske twice earlier and was victorious in both the events. In addition, both the clashes were in clay.
