‘Those Things Don’t Equate’ – Sloane Stephens’ Honest Revelation About Her Mad Obsession With Winning

Sloane Stephens, the American tennis professional, turned pro in the year 2009 and achieved her career highest ranking of World no.3 in 2018. Further, she clinched the title at the 2017 US Open and had a run till the finals of the French Open in 2018. However, she could not make use of her peak form because of a pestering foot injury.

Speaking of the ongoing clay-court season, Stephens took part in every major event and faced a first-round exit in almost all of them. Currently, she is testing her luck in the red dirt of the French Open. Further, the American recently sat down for a podcast and shared the ups and downs of her professional career. Also, she gave a comparison of her earlier and current mindset.

Sloane Stephens speaks about winning isn’t everything

While speaking with Whoop Stephens shared how practicing gratitude, shifting her mindset and finding self-acceptance stopped her from taking on unnecessary pressure. She said, ” I was just so stressed out with winning and obsessed with winning. And my ranking was like who I was as a person. And like those things don’t like equate. It’s not the same. And I feel like attaching those two things was so stressful.”

On Sunday, the 29-year-old clashed with the 22-year-old German tennis professional Jule Niemeier in the first round of the French Open. After losing the first set by 5-7, Stephens bounced back and regained her grip over the match in the second set.

She claimed the second set 6-4 and slipped the ticket to the second round out of Niemeier’s hands in the last set by 6-2. Further, the right-handed tennis ace will compete for a position in the last 32 of the event on coming Wednesday.

Who is Stephens’ next opponent?

Sloane Stephens will lock horns with the Romanian tennis ace Sorana Cirstea in the second round of the French Open. Stephens met Cirstea for the first time in the hard courts of the Dubai International Championship in the year 2013. She outclassed the Romanian in a three-set long match by 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Thus securing a lead of 1-0 in head-to-head records.

However, currently Stephens going through some rough patches. Therefore, there is a possibility that Cirstea might get the better of her and make her take an early exit in yet another clay based tournament.
