Serena Williams, the American tennis legend, has been embroiled in numerous controversies throughout her career. One of the most contentious issues in sports remains to be Williams’ furious exchange with chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the 2018 US Open final. Following that incident, her husband, Alexis Ohanian, took to social media to defend her.

Ohanian took to Twitter and criticized the journalist who had written an article about his wife’s statements during her final against Naomi Osaka. 

Serena Williams’ husband Ohanian jumps to her defense

Alexis Ohanian, the husband of Serena Williams, lashed out sternly at a New York Times article that contradicted Williams’ claims of unequal treatment of female tennis players. After receiving a reprimand for taking instructions from coach Patrick Mouratoglou during the match, Williams received a game penalty for a string of code infractions.

Williams claimed that she was punished for verbal abuse solely because she is a woman, but the article drew no conclusions about this. The most significant finding in the article was that women at grand slams had received 152 fines for coaching. It was nearly twice as much as the 87 fines issued to men for the same infraction.

Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian, Who Is a Gaming Aficionado, Gets Ecstatic After NBA Legend Michael Jordan’s Inclusion in a New Game

Ohanian took a jibe at the reporter by saying “@christophclarey – happy to help fund an independent research team to run the actual analysis! Statistics can be illuminating when you know what you’re looking for.”

Further, he added, “Live footage of @christophclarey when he realizes he wasted all that ink on a misleading headline with a body of “research” that means literally nothing. How will @nytimes respond?” Ohanian looked to be outraged, as the investigation did not support Williams’ allegations of sexism. Reddit’s founder attacked the story in a string of heated tweets.

By displaying a donation he made to the public schooling charity, Donors Choose, Ohanian showed his dissatisfaction with the article. He said that he had given the organization $7140 “to make sure the next generation gets access to learn basic statistics”.

Williams announces retirement prior to the US Open

Serena Williams recently announced her retirement. The US Open will be the last tournament of her career.

Williams’ illustrious run has been breathtaking to date; 23 Grand Slam titles, 319 weeks as the number one, and 4 Olympic gold medals. She changed sports, both on and off the court, throughout her two-decade-long career.
