‘Wish You Could Have Been a Better Role Model for Me on the Court’ – Serena Williams Has an Open Conversation With Venus Williams

There have been numerous examples of legendary siblings in tennis. From John and Patrick McEnroe to Bob and Mike Bryan, tennis has seen glorious success stories of siblings. At the very top are Venus and Serena Williams, one of the most successful siblings any sport has seen.
The Williams sisters have enthralled tennis fans across the globe for more than 25 years now. While the younger Williams sister has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the elder sister has 7 major titles in her kitty. Additionally, the two have also paired up in doubles to win 14 Grand Slam doubles titles.

Recently, the two sisters were involved in a candid conversation where they were discussing the importance of being confident and their role models.
Serena Williams reveals her role model
Venus and Serena featured in the March 2022 issue of Harper’s BAZAAR cover story. Further, in the ‘Explains it All’ series, Venus asked Serena, “You’re a role model for so many people and you just pave the way for so many athletes of all kinds. How does that make you feel?”
The younger Williams sister replied, “It makes me feel good. I never started out to be a role model. You were actually always my role model. I did everything that you did, and even down to just how I behaved off the court and how I behaved in life and decisions that I’ve made, I wish you could have been a better role model for me on the court. I’ve done some things that were…” Venus interrupted her and said, “You did everything perfect.” Serena laughed and said, “I did everything perfectly perfect.”

Further, Serena added, “I really always tell people, don’t always look to the athletes or the stars or whatever it is now, to have a role model. Your role model could be right in your house.”

Where are the two sisters now?
Serena and Venus have been sidelined from the tour due to their respective injuries. The younger Williams sister’s last match was at The Championships, Wimbledon in June last year, where she was forced to retire in the first round after slipping on the wet grass and injuring her hamstring.
