AEW referee Aubrey Edwards speaks about how she came to know WWE wasn’t for her after her short stint at the company.

Aubrey worked with WWE while the company was experiencing a women’s revolution. The company yearned for female performers as well as referees.

Edwards worked in the gaming industry for ten years. Three years back she officiated her wrestling match and in this small amount of time, she has made a name for herself.

Edwards impressed the people at NXT and was selected to officiate the Mae Young Classic.

A few months down the line following the Mae Young Classic, she officiated three shows for NXT and had a dream moment when she officiated in WWE’s first-ever only women’s PPV Evolution.

Despite doing multiple events for WWE, she was never offered a contract.

Aubrey Edwards feels fortunate AEW was around

Aubrey Edwards is a no-nonsense referee on AEW, standing up against the likes of Y2J during matches. On Chris Jericho’s Talk, Edwards speaks about how AEW is the company that aligns with her personality.

“They (WWE) kind of stopped calling me, I reached out to them a little later and they said, ‘We’ve got nothing for you’ and then they stopped calling. Given my personality, I don’t think I would have been successful there.

“I’m really fortunate AEW came around because this is a much better place for me, for who I am as a person and what I want out of being a performer. We let our referees be personalities.

“Tony Khan has said that ‘Our referees have personalities because they are people with personalities.’ At [WWE], they don’t say their names on TV. They are nameless faces, whereas Jim Ross is saying everyone’s name. I don’t know why I don’t get it, I don’t agree with it, but it’s not my product,” claims Edwards.

Chris Jericho comments on WWE’s overselling

WWE is big a huge global entity. The smallest of things that happen in the organization create a wildfire on social media. The company promotes what they prefer like there is no tomorrow.
