Chris Jericho is one of the greatest ever to lace up a pair of wrestling boots. While he may be AEW’s top dog now, but he was a WWE guy for almost two decades! Despite being in the company that long, Jericho left in 2018, following disappointment over his place on the WrestleMania card.

Vince McMahon said Chris Jericho would main event WrestleMania 33

While talking to Inside the Ropes, ‘Demo God’ Chris Jericho shared what led to WWE departure in 2018. He said Vince McMahon had himself told him he would main event WrestleMania 33 and win the Universal Championship as a babyface but plans changed just one week later!

The 7-time World Champion shared he did not mind being off the main event spot. He knew his match with KO was a marquee match storyline-wise, while the Lesnar-Goldberg match was a marquee match from the money point. What bothered him though was his position on the card.

“The difference was we went from the main event to being put on second. Now, that’s an insult, because the second match is just another match,” said Jericho. “Either you’re on last, or you’re on first, and maybe the semi-main event. But that’s it. Those are your big money spots for WrestleMania.”

“To go on second, after this whole great story, which was penciled in at some point for the main event, that’s what hit me. And that’s when I was like, ‘okay great, time to go,'” he concluded.

Chris Jericho further revealed he originally decided to focus on the Fozzy Tours for Judas and would return to WWE in the future if he feels like. To everyone’s surprise, Jericho appeared in NJPW and the rest is history!

‘Le Champion’ has been the spearhead of the AEW roster and has been a pillar for the company’s success. Jericho has been in AEW for two years now, and it seems highly unlikely he will return to WWE in an in-ring capacity in the future. However, he will appear on WWE programming immediately after Night 2 of WrestleMania 37!
