WWE released the former WWE champion, Jeff Hardy, this Thursday. Although no official statement has been issued from either of the parties, the reports suggest that WWE had no choice but to fire Jeff after he declined going into rehab.

The reason WWE ordered the Charismatic Enigma to check into rehab is that on December 4th during a live event, Hardy looked “sluggish” during the fight and eventually took off before finishing the match.

Veteran wrestling journalist, Dave Meltzer recently reported that WWE released Jeff Hardy knowing that the Daredevil could sign with Tony Khan’s AEW and become the main event player over there.

But once the younger Hardy denied checking into rehab, the company had no other choice than to fire him. However, Jeff knew what would happen if he denied the orders.

Hardy will be serving the standard 90-day no-compete clause before he can show up in any other promotion to wrestle. This means Jeff Hardy will become a free agent in March 2022.

AEW might capitalize on this opportunity after the firing of Jeff Hardy

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has potentially shed some more light on Hardy’s release, suggesting that Jeff could join brother Matt in AEW.

Meltzer also noted that this is not something new for Jeff because this exact situation happened when he was wrestling in TNA (now IMPACT Wrestling).

“WWE did this [released Hardy] with full knowledge there was at least a chance Hardy would be signed by AEW and would likely be a major star there. But once Hardy refused to go to rehab, WWE’s hands were tied.”

“This type of situation is nothing new for Hardy, and both TNA and WWE had, over and over, hired him after the other had let him go for these same reasons. And in most cases, the end of the story ended up the same.” Dave wrote.
