Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio participated in one of the most polarizing matches of the year. While many people applauded the WWE for trying to do something new with the Eye for an Eye stipulation, others vehemently rejected it for its ridiculously over the top picturisation.

That included Mysterio’s eye literally popping out, with a gumball eye being used to create the effect. To be honest, professional wrestling has always been about the suspension of disbelief, the industry can’t exist without it (we literally believe that Taker buries his opponents alive and rises from the dead).

However, at some point, you need to ask yourself if your intelligence is being insulted.

Whatever be your answer, Seth Rollins views this in a completely different way. As per the Monday Night Messiah, this constitutes a step-motherly treatment for WWE from a section of the fans.

“I think we sort of accomplished what wrestling wants to accomplish and that is we told a very interesting story and there was some outside interest in the finish even though it was very weird – and that’s OK.

“I think pro wrestling can just be one-on-one, hold-for-hold wrestling or it can be storytelling like any other form of television and I think that when you start to look at it too critically, especially stuff like that, I dunno, to me it reeks of 2020 trying to pick everything apart.

“If you like the Lake of Reincarnation in AEW but you hate the eye-for-an-eye match… you know what I mean? Then where are we really at here?”

Is Rollins’ criticism justified?

There’s some truth to what Rollins is saying about fans judging WWE way more critically than they do with AEW.

However, Rollins also needs to look at the criticism and realize the crux of it. The fans have no qualms with professional wrestling defying age-old expectations and going overboard with its stories.

However, there’s always a trade-off when you willingly believe something you know is too unrealistic. You want that story to be compelling enough in its effort. The entire Lake of Reincarnation storyline was a devoted effort of Matt Hardy to create a folklore that resonates with audiences. Along with it, he left just enough questions which continue to arouse curiosity.
