Matt Cardona is currently working with AEW. If the name doesn’t ring any bell, he used to wrestle under a different name. The wrestling world knows him as Zack Ryder.

He was recently released by WWE due to the company’s COVID-19 related budget cuts on April 15th.

Ryder debuted for AEW in July under his real name Matt Cardona. He made his in-ring debut on 5th August. However, it doesn’t seem like Cardona has let his WWE past go.

The match finished after just one brogue kick from the champion. The former WWE intercontinental champion cheekily captioned, “I almost had him.”

Matt is currently signed under the up and coming wrestling company with a five appearance deal. However, the star is looking forward to sticking with the company for the long term.

He told Sportskeeda“Yes, so there’s a couple appearances, a few appearances right now, but listen… I’m not here for a little vacation,” Cardona said. “I’m here to win the TNT Title, the AEW Title, to get all those action figures! I’m here because I want to be here. You know what I’m saying? So we’ll get there. Just stayed tuned. Everybody just take a chill pill, and relax, and enjoy the show!”

“You know, the past two weeks I was there, I loved it. It was great. You know, it was weird being like the new kid in school. You’re meeting all these new friends and stuff like that, but you know, the reception online has been great. Couple of haters, whatever, it’s life, gonna happen, but I was happy with my performance and I can’t wait to do more with them.”

He finds himself in a new company after 15 years. Cardona is widely respected in the wrestling industry and brings a lot of experience with him. Even if not as a performer, he could immensely help as a mentor to many of AEW’s younger, more inexperienced wrestlers.
