A few years ago, Stone Cold Steve Austin appeared on the first episode of Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho. He recalled asking The Undertaker about using a skull design for his merchandise.
Austin said, “The creative idea then goes to Vince. Then he calls me up and he goes, ‘Hello Steve, that skull, that’s kind of Undertaker’s gimmick, don’t you think?’ I said I don’t think it is because The Undertaker is The Undertaker. You know this is all back in the days Chris when you didn’t wanted to infringe on anybody’s gimmick.”
He added, “So it’s clear by The Undertaker, it’s good with me. So I called Taker and said, ‘Hey, Taker, check it out.’ I said. ‘Man I have to do a t-shirt that a skull on the back, but Vince thinks says it might be gimmick infringement. I am just driving right by you to see it’s cool’. You know how Taker is…he says, ‘Go for it bro.”
The Deadman didn’t want to stop Austin from rising up the ranks. Further, Stone Cold also paid his gratitude to Taker for clearing the doubts regarding the skull design and letting him use it. Austin claims to have pride for his merchandise as the design was his idea.
It is safe to say the permission of The Phenom for Skull design made Austin’s character more memorable. The skull design t-shirts are the iconic part of The Texas Rattlesnake’s WWE career.
