It has been almost a decade since Dwayne Johnson had a proper feud with someone from the current roster. This year, there were many rumors about Johnson returning and putting an end to Roman Reigns‘ title run. It would have been the perfect storyline and match to close off WWE’s greatest championship run this century.

But as we all know now, Cody Rhodes is in line to do the same at WrestleMania. While it still is going to be a banger main event, Cody is no Rock. The hype and eyes that Johnson would have brought if he would have been able to wrestle would be enormous, given his status in pop culture. But it seems like The Rock is still going to return, title match or not.

When Rhodes came out on top in this year’s Royal Rumble, people lost any hope of The Rock making it to WrestleMania 39. But Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer recently added fire to Johnson’s cameo at WrestleMania.

He reported, “The same goes for Dwayne [The Rock]. Dwayne could be there in some way or fashion.”

We’re past that point. Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble. He’s getting the championship match. It ain’t Dwayne anymore. Dwayne’s not wrestling anybody else unless it’s a three-second match… He did not feel that he had the time to get in the shape that he needed to be in to do a WrestleMania-caliber main event and he left the door open for next year.

The last time we saw Johnson come to WrestleMania was when he had a segment with Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold. So, fans at least want more than just an appearance from The Rock. Some speculations have Johnson coming to the rescue of Cody at the end of Night 2. While others want their favorite current superstars to have a one-on-one segment with the legend.
