Former WCW Ladies Champion Candi Devine Passes Away at Age 63

Former 4-time AWA Women’s Champion Candi Devine is no more. On the morning of February 9, 2022, she passed away in a hospice care facility. Candi suffered multiple ailments and was in the news regularly since 2021.
She faced multiple health issues, one after the other. In April 2021 she got a seizure which resulted in her lung collapsing. Later, she suffered a fractured back when she fell down and was back in the hospital. The seizures eventually took their toll, as in February 2022, she was admitted to the hospital again. This time, the seizures caused serious problems, including liver and brain damage. Unfortunately, Candi could not recover from these ailments.

The wrestling career of Candi Devine
Devine’s best run in wrestling happened in the American Wrestling Association, where she was a part of multiple big-ticket matches. In addition to winning the AWA Women’s Championship on four different occasions, she won battle royals and several other matches.

Her all-time great rivals included Sherri Martel, Wendi Richter, and Judy Martin. Perhaps her best rivalry was with Martel and Devine always gave a stellar performance. She also competed in the independent circuit, where she became a part of the Ladies Professional Wrestling Association. Devine won the UWF Women’s Championship on two different occasions in the late 1990s.
Devine also competed in Windy City Pro Wrestling (WCPW) and found incredible success. The promotion was known back then as Windy City Wrestling (WCW) and Devine became its inaugural WCW Ladies’ Champion. She held this championship on three different occasions while competing for the promotion.
Candi had a great wrestling career and won multiple championships. Tragically, in 1985, Divine got seriously injured in Memphis while in a match with Amy Monroe.
Candi Devine’s life outside wrestling
Born as Candace Rummel on January 1, 1959, Devine was an avid wrestling fan. She loved wrestling so much that she eventually started training for it. In addition to wrestling, she also graduated from the American Institute of Modeling in Nashville.

Her personal life became quite public when she got involved with wrestler Tom Burton. They appeared on television as a part of Divorce Court in 2009. Rummel’s career further included working at a gym besides wrestling and modeling.

It is truly heartbreaking news that she has passed away. She has left a legacy behind her that her fans will cherish. Rummel received multiple awards recognizing her contributions to the wrestling industry. Awards include the women’s wrestling award by the Cauliflower Alley Club and honors by the Ladies International Wrestling Association and PGWA.
