Edge won the 2021 Royal Rumble, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. A part-timer being pushed to the top of the WWE might spurn a lot of hardcore WWE fans, but this nostalgia run has attracted a massive casual audience.

Needless to say, Edge might just be the best choice to headline WrestleMania. However, a former WWE writer/booker does not agree.

Vince Russo did not like Edge winning the Royal Rumble

The former WWE and WCW head writer believes that the locker room morale goes down when a part-timer highlights the biggest event of the year. He totally understands the star power Edge brought to the Rumble, but as per him, a full-timer or a young talent deserving a push should have won the match.

“Just doesn’t send a good message to the locker room that no full-timer on the roster was worthy of going over and being in that spot. Just my view. But, I don’t think morale was EVER important to WWE.”

Russo might be right, as it is often alleged that the term morale is alien to WWE. We hear of locker room leaders and authority figures who try to keep the spirits high, but one bad day at the office is enough to bring someone’s morale down.

Edge’s return brought a smile to our faces, but is the rest of the WWE locker room smiling?

Will the Rated-R Superstar live up to the hype?

Edge’s return in 2020 was a gigantic moment, but his eventual run faltered meteorically. He and Randy Orton wrestled a slow, plodding Last Man Standing match at WrestleMania 36. The ‘Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ was less Omega vs Okada and more typical WWE kick-out fest.

And now Edge is thrust into the main event of WrestleMania. He might’ve done it before in 2008, but Edge got injured after wrestling only three matches in 2020. The pressure of a WrestleMania main event might put too much strain on a man who hasn’t wrestled in nine months, and prior to that, nine years.

Edge defeated Randy Orton on Raw in what was a superb main event. If he can pull out matches like these on a bi-weekly basis, Edge might be completely prepared for WrestleMania.

What made Drew McIntyre popular from his Rumble win to WrestleMania was his full-time schedule. If Edge wants to be a serious WrestleMania headliner, he will have to pull out McIntyre’s levels of performance.
