Since the AEW started in 2019, the pro wrestling promotion has been gaining much popularity. With dynamic stars like CM Punk, Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, and many more, AEW has successfully made its mark. The young promotion has given the spotlight to the former wrestlers of WWE and the strategy worked out well for them. Thus, WWE legends leaving through the Forbidden Door would never be exciting news for WWE. And when one superstar joined AEW, it came as a shock to former CEO Vince McMahon.
The superstar was none other than former WWE champion Chris Jericho. Jericho wasn’t in any contract with the WWE when he signed for AEW. But still seeing one of the best joining the opposition, surely had given McMahon a headache.

The Sexy Beast opened up in his recent podcast that Vince McMahon couldn’t believe, as he thought Jericho was bluffing. “I did give WWE a chance, though. I said, here’s the offer that I’ve gotten from this new company. And I was told to, Vince said, ‘Take it.’ I think he thought I was bluffing. And when I took it, then about a week later he’s like, ‘You took it?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Can you get out of it?’ I said, ‘No! You told me to take it. Why would I try to get out of it?”

But Jericho had no plan to back out from the new promotion. And when asked about the confidential details of the AEW, ‘The Man of 1004 Holds’ refused to rat out. Jericho might have had faith in AEW from the beginning.

The former WWE Undisputed Champion also opened up about the initial process of the promotion. Jericho was responsible for the initial recruitment of the AEW. But The King of the World refused to give out any information to McMahon as it was super confidential at that time.

“And he’s (Vince McMahon) like, who is kind of bringing in guys, who is the broker to get guys to come in, that’s what Vince is asking me, and it’s like, I’m thinking, well, it’s me, but I don’t want to tell him that. And he’s asking me all this, what kind of TV deal, you can’t ask me these questions!” said Jericho.

Vince McMahon had operated the WWE promotion successfully for 40 years before his sudden retirement this year. Understandably, McMahon took Jericho’s deal as a bluff, as he would’ve never thought that a superstar like Jericho would shift to a new promotion.
