Eddie was one of the best in the ring, but he was even better at character work. He was effective both as a heel and as a babyface.

Rey and Eddie’s iconic match helped bring Lucha Libre to the uncharted waters of WWE. Both men debuted in WWE at the height of the Attitude Era.

Weapon filled brawls, Hell in a Cell matches, TLC car crashes and chaotic tag team matches were aplenty, but fans had never seen the fast-paced action of Lucha Libre.

“I think it definitely opened up the viewership for the fans. They were accepting this new style that was coming in. [I also] think it opened the gateway for future generations yet to come. To say we have Santos Escobar, another Latino that is a Cruiserweight champ after 23 years– I think the direction that we put on that match definitely has been a barrier opening for younger talent,” said Mysterio about the impact of his match against Eddie.

Mysterio, Guerrero and Dean Malenko paved the way for the wrestlers of today

Rey reflected on his former best friend, “I wish he was still here, you know, so he can receive all this ovation from the fans and he can understand how much it meant 23 years later. I’m sure he is from the heavens.”

Rey even talked about another great wrestler who matched the Lucha Libre style with classic mat wrestling. He was Dean Malenko.

“Dean was the first guy that took me in when I went to WCW. There was definitely a connection right off the bat. Dean had already been to Japan and did the J-Cup. So, you know, I think the size and the weight difference and him wanting to learn and do a little more Lucha, as well as being around Eddie and Jericho, it definitely gave him a different vision of what could really happen with that Lucha Libre style.”

Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were trailblazers. They paved the path for wrestlers like Rey Fenix, Pentagon Jr, Andrade and even NXT’s Santos Escobar and the rest of the cruiserweights of the world.

Mysterio is still entertaining fans on Smackdown. Malenko has his own wrestling school and works closely with AEW. Eddie Guerrero died in 2006 but his legacy is still celebrated in every wrestling promotion.
