WWE fans have heard and seen it all by now. With all the heel turns and promotion, returns and redemptions, nothing could possibly surprise them. That statement may not be entirely true and hold on to your chairs for this one. The Undertaker recently revealed that he had actually considered leaving WWE at one point!

Yes, “The Deadman” wanted to leave the place that he called home. He would then join WWE’s rival promotion WCW (World Championship Wrestling).

At that time WCW was doing better than WWE and was just getting started. They even managed to rope in some of WWE’s most iconic Superstars such as Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Scott Steiner.

While the buzz of changing ships was going around, The Undertaker claims that he also had the idea of joining WCW.

“Yeah, there was a time I was so frustrated with our creative direction. We had a bunch of really goofy characters,” says Taker. “They (WCW) are down there doing real angles.”

The Undertaker explained how WCW at that time and a much more realistic and tempting scene than WWE. It also had great storylines and angles that easily outshined the charades of WWE then.

WCW made an offer that was hard to refuse

“The Phenom” also admitted that it would be a significant increase in pay as well. He had heard that WCW was handing out big cheques to Superstars like him and had the urge to take up this offer.

“It was common knowledge that they opened up the checkbook,” says Taker. “I was hearing guys talking about the money they are making. You would be able to get a good check and stay at home most of the time.”

It sounds like a dream job and almost anyone would take up the offer. WCW had really cut all the strings that were keeping The Undertaker at WWE. All but one.

“Those thoughts were there. But, when it got down to it, I said I can’t. Obviously, I’m not the best businessman but something inside me said you can’t leave here,” explains Taker.

The Undertaker had a moral conflict and there was something inside telling him not to leave WWE. Destiny? Perhaps. But then he goes on to explain further.

The Undertaker wasn’t good enough for WCW!

“One, when I was there, and although the management had changed at this point, I went in to renegotiate a contract. I had been there for 8 or 9 months. My deal was coming up.”

“The Deadman” reveals that he actually went to the WCW management which had just undergone a change. He wanted to sign a deal with them and discuss terms for his contract. However, what they said shocked him.

“I was trying to get a little bump in the money,” explains Taker. “I was on the bare minimum deal. I wasn’t looking to break the house. I went in and met with Jim Herd, Ole Anderson, and Jim Barnett. They looked at me straight in the eyes, and said you are a great athlete, but nobody will ever pay to see you wrestle.”

These words really hit The Undertaker. He went in expecting to get a major deal and money like his colleagues who joined WCW. He wanted an upgrade from the minimum wages he was receiving in WWE.

Instead, the management snubbed him on lines that no one would pay to see him wrestle. The Undertaker realized what a big mistake he was making then. He realized how much WWE and Vince McMahon had done for him.

“My loyalty to Vince was stronger than the short term cash I could have made if I left,” says Taker. This attempt to leave WWE had brought “The Phenom” closer to it than ever before.

Over twenty years later with a career greater than any other wrestler in history, The Undertaker is preparing for his final joust. He is set to retire a legend in WWE, the greatest of them all. We don’t think there’s anybody now who wouldn’t want to pay to see The Undertaker.
