Back then, Calaway revealed that he was still trying to make it as a professional wrestler. He was signed to WCW and wanted to renegotiate his contract.

“I went into my meeting with WCW focused on renegotiating my contract,” says Taker. “Jim Herd, who was running WCW at the time, was there, as was Ole Anderson, the booker, and Jim Barnett. I’d only been there for just under a year, and I was only looking for a little bump in my contract.”

Calaway revealed that what happened next was a defining moment in his career. “I got looked straight in the eyes and heard, ‘Mark, you’re a great athlete, but no one is ever going to pay money to see you wrestle.’”

Calaway explained how this moment went a long way. He realized soon that he was never going to be anything more than a filler. WCW was using him as a platform for other stars to build their careers.

He then decided to talk to Paul Heyman himself. The Undertaker was one of Heyman’s original clients.  With Heyman, The Undertaker’s career took a sharp turn. He talks about the time he realized that he was ‘a Paul Heyman Guy’

“Being a ‘Paul Heyman Guy,’ I’d heard that for years but never thought much about it,” jokes Calaway. “One day I realized, ‘Well shoot, I’m a Paul Heyman Guy.’

WWE was a welcome change for  The Undertaker

He explained how his WCW career was quickly burning down and that there was nothing left to keep the flame going there.

“First I was with Danny Spivey in WCW and we were the Skyscrapers, and Teddy Long was our manager,” says Calaway. “Danny left, and it was just me. That’s when they brought Paul into the company and put him with me. We traveled together and made all the towns together, and Paul really came to be a beneficial part of my career.”

Calaway is grateful for Heyman’s arrival as it significantly changed the trajectory of his career. He then talks about how Heyman managed to get him in WWE.

“Paul was friends with Bruce Prichard, and those two opened up a line of conversation about coming to the WWE,” explains Calaway.“Paul played a pivotal part in keeping the lines of communication open with WWE,”

The Undertaker spares no detail in describing how Paul Heyman was so crucial to the growth of his career. He tells us how Heyman facilitated the lines of communication right up to Vince McMahon.

“Paul was talking to Bruce Prichard, and Bruce was talking to Vince. Paul pushed Bruce, and I finally got that meeting with Vince.,” says Calaway. “So hindsight being 20/20, I am one of the original ‘Paul Heyman Guys.’”
