There has only been one promo that shook the very foundations of the WWE. Never had the empire built by Vince McMahon come under so much jeopardy when this superstar spoke. CM Punk took six minutes to cut the most daring promo in wrestling history. He not only punched the fourth wall but delivered a GTS to it.

John Cena faced R-Truth in a tables match on Monday Night Raw. Truth was coming off a big loss to Cena at Capitol Punishment and needed a win over the champion to keep himself in the title picture.

As the match approached its final stages, CM Punk walked out and cost Cena the match by flipping over a table. This distracted Cena long enough for Truth to spear him through another table.

The week prior to that, Punk won a No. 1 contender’s match for the WWE Championship. He put away Alberto del Rio and Rey Mysterio to win a title shot at Money in the Bank.

After the victory, Punk announced that his WWE contract is ending the night of Money in the Bank. He said he’s leaving, and he’s leaving with the WWE Championship.

This prompted Punk to play some mind games with Cena in the run up to the match. However, instead of playing mind games with Cena, he took shots at every individual who he thought was ruining professional wrestling.

What did CM Punk say?

“Before I leave with the WWE Championship, there are a lot of things I want to get off my chest. I don’t hate you John, I don’t even dislike you, but I hate this idea that you’re the best. I’m the best. I’m the best in the world. There is one thing you’re better at than I am, is kissing Vince McMahon’s a**.”

Punk name dropped Hulk Hogan and Dwayne Johnson as well, calling them pets of Vince McMahon. He talked about how Paul Heyman saw something in him that WWE did not want to see. He compared himself to Brock Lesnar, another Paul Heyman guy.

“The difference between Brock and me, is that I’m leaving with the WWE Championship.”

“No body can touch me,” yelled Punk. He questioned why he wasn’t featured by WWE on their merchandise. The airing of grievances ended with him questioning why Dwayne Johnson is in the main event of WrestleMania instead of him. He even dropped the idea of defending the WWE Championship in NJPW or Ring of Honor before giving a shout out to Colt Cabana on live television.

Punk attacks Vince McMahon

“I’d like to think that maybe this company will be better after Vince McMahon’s dead. But it won’t, ’cause it’ll get taken over by his idiotic daughter and his doofus son-in-law.”

The straw that broke the camel’s back was him calling Vince McMahon a bully.

He was about to question WWE’s anti-bullying campaign, when the ironic part is that the CEO is a bully. At that point, Punk’s mic cut off, and the show came to an abrupt end.

The aftermath of CM Punk’s pipebomb

Punk’s harsh words led to several memorable segments. McMahon tried to get Punk to sign a contract, but Punk drew up his own contract with his lawyers. The terms of Punk’s contract were absurd, from candy bars with his face on it, to CM Punk: The Movie, to his own private jet.

Punk tore up the contract once he got punched in the mouth by John Cena. Unfortunately for Cena, the punch would come back to bite him, after Punk delivered a match-winning GTS at Money in the Bank to win the WWE title. After celebrating with his hometown crowd, Punk escaped through them, but not before blowing one last kiss at Vince McMahon.

The reasons stated by Punk and his grievances against the company would eventually become the major factors behind his exit from WWE. Some might say Punk peaked during the pipebomb promo, but it was only the beginning of the end.
