By the late 2000s, Dwayne Johnson carved a mark in Hollywood. Even though his movies were not breaking box-office numbers like today, he was a famous star. Moreover, it was the same time the Marvel Cinematic Universe was gaining steam with the introduction of Iron Man in 2007. Several X-Men films also etched their name in the mainstream with numerous movies. Surprisingly, a director once gave up a chance to work for a Marvel film, only to direct another movie of The Rock.
This 2006 movie of The Brahma Bull wasn’t a success at the box office after its release. The 48-year-old decided to give up the $464 Million worth comic book movie to direct and write this movie.

Kelly said, “I did have a meeting on that project, and I think I was definitely very much in the running. That was an opportunity that I could have aggressively pursued, but I had Dwayne Johnson and the whole cast committed to Southland Tales. I mean, I had Dwayne on board, and I was not going to turn my back on him, ever.”
The $16 million director added, “So, listen, that happens all the time where opportunities come up. I’m someone that, to this day, I feel so grateful to have made Southland Tales, despite the rollercoaster ride that this film has been on.”
That time was a revolutionary one for making sequels and comic book movies. While 21st Century Fox heavily invested in the X-Men franchise, MCU was coming up with its own movies. Kelly had a tremendous opportunity, but he decided to work with ‘The Most Electrifying Man in WWE’ in Southland Tales.
