The thing about pro wrestling is that it requires you to be a very different person on-screen and off-screen. You might be the no-nonsense cold blooded dude on camera. But if you really want opportunities to shine, you need to massage some egos backstage. Take the two contrasting examples of Baron Corbin and Matt Riddle.

A lot of you might feel that Corbin gets way more time in the spotlight than he deserves. To be honest, he’s not the best in ring worker nor the best promo. However, it’s generally believed that he’s well liked backstage by his peers as well as those calling the shots.

On the other hand, Matt Riddle will probably have to bend over backwards in order to ever have shot at the main event scene. Reasons? Simply because he speaks a lot more about people that he shouldn’t, those that have the power to change the course of a storyline just by talking to the bosses.

Since joining the WWE, the king of bros has not been afraid to speak his mind. If there’s really an unscripted pipe bomb, it’s Riddle. He has constantly called out Golberg for being a bad wrestler and Brock Lesnar for not having the right attitude.

Those are names that you don’t take in a negative light if you are really looking to build a career. In fact, it was reported that he even had a backstage altercation with Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble. Riddle revealed in an interview to talk sport about how his straightforward nature has hurt his chances.

What did Matt Riddle say?

Matt Riddle was outspoken even in this answer. He’s made no secret of the fact that he wants to fight and retire Brock Lesnar. However, he believes that even though Lesnar might not like him, if the money is right he won’t say no.

“You know, I think it might have hurt the chances. But at the same time, it’s hurt the chances for all the wrong reasons.

“It hasn’t hurt the chances in terms of my employer, the people in charge or the producers, it’s more so hurt the chances because some people’s egos get a little hurt.

“How do I get these matches? Well, I’m on SmackDown now, all I have to do is keep getting more and more valuable -and it seems that’s what happening – and eventually these guys are going to be like ‘Oh, I want another paycheck,’ and they’ll have to go through me to get it. That’s my goal. That’s what I’m going to do.

“I haven’t been calling out for the matches lately because there’s no point. These guys only really work off one thing and it’s money, so how can I get that? I got to be worth more to them. I got to become valuable enough to get them in the ring with me. So, that’s what I’ll do then.”
