The Day Mark Calaway Became The Undertaker Forever: “I Had Already Felt the Momentum”

The Undertaker lived “The Deadman” character for 30+ years when he was in WWE. His sheer hard work and creativity made the character a legend in pro-wrestling history. He preserved the kayfabe of the character for a long time.

Recently, appearing on Out of Character with Ryan Satin The Undertaker, talked about his illustrious careers and shared some unheard moments. Some of those moments were about his personal life while he also talked a bit about the time he spent on the road.

The Phenom, while talking, addressed the time when he was in The Undertaker character 24×7. It was hard for The Deadman to shut off The Phenom side while he was outside the ring.

Taker said, “Honestly it was before 91 when, before, I wrestled Hogan at Survivor Series and won the title. I had already felt the momentum and just the difference my character presented as opposed to a lot of the other characters. That was always my goal to be different. One I studied whoever was on top.”

The Undertaker had to make his character different from all other WWE superstars at the time and so he went into full Phenom mode.

How did The Undertaker prepare to make his gimmick different?

The Undertaker stated that when he thought his character had gotten the exposure; he was the character full time. Taker studied some top WWE stars at the time and also watched some dark movies characters closely.

He said, “I studied Warrior and I studied Hogan and I studied Jake the Snake and I was watching what they were doing and was always thinking like what I am gonna do, what I am gonna present that’s different than everything stereotypically you think of a professional wrestler and then it started coming to me and I am studying Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers and all these different things”

Taker talked about how it was easier to keep kayfabe alive back then, as there was no social media and no cell phones. Fans didn’t record him wherever he was seen.

When did The Undertaker know he did a great job?

The Undertaker shared he got weird questions sometimes. He told some instances when people came to him and asked if he was really dead.

Taker took this as a compliment as he got to know he had given credibility to that character. Fans believed that The Undertaker they saw on TV was the same in real life and that was an achievement for Taker.
