In 2011, CM Punk finally made it to the summit of WWE. Since debuting in 2006, Punk had only dreamt of making to the main event picture in WWE and win the big one.

At Money in the Bank in 2011, Punk beat John Cena for the WWE Championship and left WWE. He returned a month later to face Cena at SummerSlam for the Undisputed WWE Championship, but things went south for Punk.

After losing the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, Punk started targeting the special guest referee of that match: Triple H. The two clashed in a blockbuster No Disqualification match at Night of Champions. Before the PPV, the two wrestlers exchanged harsh words on Monday Night RAW.

CM Punk and Triple H exchange words

Triple H was the first to taunt Punk, telling him he valued his opinion more than the fans. He accused Punk of blaming the WWE management for him not being given opportunities, when he should’ve gotten himself over with the WWE Universe.

Punk reminded Triple H that he was over from the moment he stepped into the WWE. He narrated the story of his debut match at WWE Survivor Series 2006, where he teamed up with D-Generation X in a traditional elimination match. Despite DX being crowd favourites, the crowd in Philadelphia chanted for CM Punk.

“I would much rather be hated for who I am, then loved for something that I’m not.”

Triple H did not take kindly to Punk’s words, calling him out on the tons of opportunities WWE gave him. Hunter also told Punk that he needs to introspect and realise why he is not in the main event instead of John Cena.

“Sometimes I look at a guy and I say, ‘That guy to me, looks great, probably gonna be the biggest thing in the business,’ turns out to be nothing. Other times I look at a guy and say, ‘You know what. I don’t think he’s got anything to offer to the business,’ and this guy turns out to be John Cena.”

It is very clear how Triple H felt about Cena as compared to CM Punk.

What made CM Punk take it too far?

Triple H angrily reminded Punk that he was the one that made their rivalry personal. He couldn’t keep the matter attached to business but had to make it personal to prove his point. Hunter told Punk that he will be facing a man, a man he insulted, and who was simply going to ‘kick his a**’.

Punk promised his opponent that he would put him to sleep and continue his quest for change in the WWE.

“Right now, this isn’t CM Punk talking to Triple H, this is Phil Brooks talking to Paul Levesque. The reason why it’s going to be so satisfying to kick your a**……” is what Punk said to have his microphone cut off.

Triple H handed Punk his mic, but it got cut off too. Punk lost it and got in Triple H’s face. The COO asked for another one, but Punk used it to deck Triple H in the head.

Who won at Night of Champions?

At Night of Champions, both gladiators fought in a brutal No Disqualification match. Both men beat each other to a pulp and even kicked out of their respective finishers. Kevin Nash, who cost Punk the title at SummerSlam, interrupted, but was put away by Punk and Triple H.

It was Triple H who prevailed in the brutal battle. Punk later revealed in an interview that he will never forgive Triple H for not putting him over at Night of Champions. It became one reason Punk walked out of the company in 2014.
